Located on the southern coast of Australia in a small island, Is a Lake called Lake Hillier, often known as The Pink Lake measuring 600 meters in length and 250 meters wide.

It doesn’t look so much pink when viewed from the surface But it gives a fine pink color when viewed from above And its aerial view looks like a pink colored bubble gum. Even if we take a small amount of water into the test tube, it will still look pink Which reveals that pink color is its permanent characteristic.

Well it is not the only pink lake there are also pink lakes in Cranbrook area. and the mystery behind their water being pink is because of a type of bacteria in them.

But what are the sources of pink color of this lake Hillier which is surrounded by only woodlands in a middle of an island?

Well, let’s surprise you with the mystery behind it.
Researchers from the meta genetics research group created a microbiome project in which they investigated different regions including the lake Hillier. So, When The researchers arrived at Lake Hillier, They collected samples from water and sediment and used them in analysis experiments.
They found out DNAs of different species in the samples collected like Dunaliella salina microalgae etc. that gives the pink color to the lake. Life forms such as Sullen and species of archea were also found in Lake Hillier which give off pinkish color.

But the most special thing is, it contains a bacteria that is often used in the fabric and leather Tanning industries.
So here comes the final piece of Puzzle, Lake Hillier was used in early 1900s as a water source for these leather and fabric Tanning industries. These industries released chemicals like Toluene and Benzene that constantly fed the pink bacteria in the lake.

In 1889, Edward Andrew tested Lake Hillier for salt production and later it became a site of salt mining. They found that the water of Lake Hillier contains 10 times more salt than the water of an ocean. But soon the salt mining was stopped as the salt obtained was too very much toxic for the humans to consume.

Well one could think that there could be some dangerous species of fish living down there or some awful monsters that could eat you up if you go swimming there. But Nah! There are no fish in the Lake, no sharks, no Whales, no monsters, Nothing just micro organisms living and thriving.

So now you know what lies inside, Lemme ask you a quick Question,
Would you like to swim in it? Do share your thoughts.

  1. I think swim is dangerous in this lake due to salt, and according to this , this salt is more toxic than usable salt.
One thing, if there are no fish in the Lake, no sharks, no Whales, no monsters, Nothing just micro organisms living and thriving, the why people afraid by them or why life is in dangerous???????
