What if the Earth was shaped like a donut?

What do you say IS IT POSSIBLE to survive on the earth if its shape would be like a donut? Or if it has a large hole in the middle?

Would a planet like this still have a moon? Would it still show tidal effect in ocean? Would gravity still work there? Would it still have same weather patterns? Would that donut shaped earth even have a chance of being habitable?

So, the answer to all these questions is YES with a little exceptions.

Planetarily, size and shape matter a lot. Mathematicians call that donut shaped earth as “toroidal world or a torus planet“. But to me, it’s a ring shaped sweet pastry.

Whatever you call that donut shaped earth, theoretically, it’s not impossible. And laws of physics also allow such shaped world to exist.

Do remember, having a so much larger center than the solid portion of the earth would result in destruction simply.

Donut shape with larger center

But in case of a planet looks like a traditional donut with smaller centre as compared to the solid portion of the earth, life is POSSIBLE on it.

Escape velocity:

It would even have same escape velocity (11.4 km/s).

Gravity:

Speaking of gravity, if our round earth has surface gravity of 1 G, the donut earth’s surface gravity would be 0.65 G along the poles and 0.3 G along the equator. So, you would weigh 3 times less than you usually do.

Spinning speed and length of its days and nights:

A donut earth would have to spin very much faster than our round earth does to balance its centrifugal force. That’s why, a day on donut earth would last only for TWO HOURS and FIFTY SECONDS. While comparing it to our traditional 24-hour day, donut earth would have at least 8 sunrises and sunsets everyday. So, the humans would have to work at the time of sunset and they would even have to sleep in day time.

But it would be worst for animals who are synced to the moon and sun’s patterns for breeding, migration and hunting.

What’d happen to the moon?

The good news is, we would still have moon which would be pulled towards the hole and the bad news is, it would affect the tides of ocean by making unstable water levels and could cause HAVOC.

Motion of moon

And what would happen to the climate?

The answer is quite satisfactory. It would have quite similar weather pattern to our round earth. Polar regions would be colder and equator would be warmer but a little bit more extreme which make SOME parts inhospitable due to storms. But overall, it would not be alarming.

While considering all these facts, donut-shaped earth could exist but keeping all facts in view, the most satisfactory earth’s shape is round which Nature already had selected for it.❣️
